<image:title>Sab‘at ’Amwaj - SAB‘AT ’AMWAJ</image:title>
<image:caption>video installation Year: 2021 A silent video on loop of a ritual in the sea, accompanied with an audio piece in which I speak of memory, the Atlantic, history, science fiction, and gaps in the sand. "Sab‘at ’Amwaj" is raw, imperfect, and anchored. It speaks to vulnerability and care, avoids the exoticization of our rituals, and straddles object of art and object of research. The ritual and the piece itself are intimately linked to lineage. A desire to keep, to record, not to forget. Finding beauty in knowledge, in memory, in transmission: a sense of belonging, of pertaining to a longer legacy. But also finding beauty in the things that get diluted with time, turn into tales, never to know which part was real and which wasn’t. The installation looks at the ocean as a space of separation and a space of linkage, attempting to rekindle the rituals that have bound our bodies and the ocean for generations and which have been erased by modernization and colonization. I invite a return of our bodies to bodies of water, to think and feel an embodied and haptic experience as an alternative to the western and removed experience of the ocean. And yet, the image and the sound are separated, echoing a tension and a need for opacity. “Sab‘at ’amwaj is a Moroccan ritual where you stand in the ocean and wait for seven waves to wash over you. The water takes away your troubles, offering you renewal, a part of you fading in the waves.” [Transcribed Excerpt from the audio] Part of “Lost, not to be found”, a month-long online programme in response to Untitled curatorial duo’s project “If a tree falls in a forest”, funded by Les rencontres d’Arles and Institut Français. <image:caption>radio show Sundown Conversations was a daily half-hour radio show I co-hosted with Karim Kattan, which was broadcasted live from June 7 to June 13, at 3:30pm BST. The piece was commissioned by Soukaina Aboulaoula as part of Right On Time radio, a temporary web radio station for Sheffield DocFest 2021. With sunset right around the corner, we discussed how an awareness of time affects our practice, and invited other artists to share in the discussion. A moment of in-betweenness, shifting lights, and generative bewilderment, twilight was an ideal pause to take stock of our relationship to time, as humans and as artists. We invited filmmakers Lina Soualem and Mounir-Aïcha Soussan, and photographer Rebecca Topakian, to share their artistic practice and that space with us. <image:caption>video Year: 2022 How to reverse a spell: the promise of an archive is a speculative triptych that traverses the disappearance and erasure of the Moroccan public archives and their colonial displacement. Frames waiting for their images, videos once stolen of a colonized people, a solar flare waiting to happen for everything to be restituted. The film is a call for access to our archives and their restitution from past colonizers, attempting, through the fabric of internet and lo-fi images, to reverse the colonial spell and make the videos appear again. Not asking for the right to use these images that were once stolen and smuggling them instead is an act of refusal and an act of return. <image:title>The one with the manes - THE ONE WITH THE MANES</image:title>
<image:caption>exhibition project "The one with the manes" is a multimedia exhibition exploring a shared history between Morocco, Brazil, and Portugal through video installations, photographs, and watercolors. Inspired by a forced exodus across the Atlantic, the exhibition explores rituality, memory, archives, and embodiment. The installations offer subtle gestures that defamiliarize the art space and bear witness to the invisible erasures operated by power. “Manes,” signifying both ancestral souls and lions' manes, permeate the exhibition's liquid, opaque structure. By focusing on sensory experiences, the installations aim to erode, infiltrate, and reimagine archives. They foreground bodies’ resonances through the past and present, envisioning liberatory futures. In the eighteenth century, the Portuguese who had colonized a city on the coast of Morocco which they named Mazagão (name of indigenous origin meaning the one with the manes), forced an exodus of two thousand people, Portuguese and slaves of unknown origins to Brazil, to a settlement they named Nova Mazagão. The project explores this thread between Morocco and Brazil, countries with different histories but with common paradoxes in the past, present, and future, using science fiction as a prism. Memory and oral history open collective conversations about our relationship to time and to bending it. One of the installations in the project is "Sab‘at ’Amwaj.” More information on the installation can be found here. <image:title>Decolonizing archives manifesto - DECOLONIZING ARCHIVES MANIFESTO</image:title>
<image:caption>series of conversations and writing workshops (ongoing) The project co-developed with Rim Mejdi (Moroccan filmmaker and artist) aims to create a collective manifesto to decolonize the Moroccan archives. It is a project that is grounded in intimate accounts of the conditions of history/ies’ erasure and dispossession perpetuated by the ongoing fabrication of a missing and inaccessible archive in the Moroccan context. Emerged from direct experiences and through conversations that took place among others during the Ch[a]rita program 2021, co-curated by Rim Mejdi, Francesca Masoero, and Nouha Ben Yebdri and hosted by LE 18, Dar Bellarj Foundation, and Mahal Art Space, the project calls for the collective writing of a manifesto to address the politics of access to archives in and from Morocco. The beginning of our project was recently published in a podcast on Screen Worlds, a decolonizing film and screen studies platform hosted by SOAS, University of London. In June 2022, we were invited to organize two talks at documenta, where we presented the manifesto project and exchanged with Subversive Film, a Palestinian collective who have been working on similar projects of archiving, as well as preservation under colonization. We shared our approaches to processes of decolonizing archives in our respective contexts, expanding on ideas at the root of this decolonial project and methodologies related to internal and/or external politics, methods of address to institutions, and intersectional experiences and how they influence our diverse forms of political existence and resistance. In July 2023, as part of the Building Archives program co-organized by Dar Bellarj and Le 18, Rim and I co-organized "Freeing Moroccan Archives from Colonialism", a three-day workshop in Marrakech which gathered artists, researchers, and cultural actors to read, discuss, and write a manifesto together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hold my hand and keep me afloat / Fragment 1 - HOLD MY HAND AND KEEP ME AFLOAT / FRAGMENT 1</image:title>
<image:caption>performance Year: 2022 Hold my hand and keep me afloat / Fragment 1 is a performance that takes on a lecture format, which questions recording and preservation through film and its encounter with the ephemerality of ritual. In a reenactment, I film the redwoods, and the redwoods film me. My body multiplies in the dance and, within the duplication, turns into fragments. The relationship and dissonance between my body initiating the performance in the studio space, my body initiating the ritual on screen, and my body holding the memory of the first ritual, are reflected in the way images, sounds, and my live reading interact. There is disembodiment in the refraction in the mirrors, the ghostly presences, between the camera, the editing software, the computer hardware, the projection screen, and my body standing behind a lectern. I read from different registers, from personal and experiential to academic, from Moroccan darija to English, some translated, some not. Navigating archives between rigidity and fluidity, recording and salvage ethnography, self-representation and opacity, the (mis)translations speak to the fits, pain, and jarring of a body that appears to be still behind the lectern.</image:caption>

<image:title>Desert Wash - DESERT WASH</image:title>
<image:caption>Filmed in the Anza-Borrego Desert and Salton Sea in Southern California, Desert Wash is a 3-channel video installation which combines images of desert landscapes, modernist architecture, and performances by Rotunda Collective (Yasmine Benabdallah and Nena Hedrick). An encounter with the Borrego Springs Desert Club, now functioning as the University of California Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center, explores property, land use, and settler colonial illusion of wild and empty desert. The artists’ bodies enter into conversation with modernist architecture to re-emerge histories and projections of control and temporalities in tension. The images and sound are referential of movies filmed in the Anza-Borrego desert, often to signify deserts elsewhere, reflecting cinema’s historical production of an iconography of the desert as narrative backdrop. Spatialized sound washes over the visitors as they’re invited to watch the images on 3 floating screens arranged in a semi-hexagonal shape in the center of the room. Amphitheater-like rows of seats are set back on either side of the screens.</image:caption>
